Liver-Clearing Avocado, Mango & Cilantro Salad - Teri Cochrane

Liver-Clearing Avocado, Mango & Cilantro Salad

There’s a reason we can’t live without our “livers” - they are our most potent detoxifier and the body’s cleaning system, helping to break down fats, dietary nutrients, and filter toxins from the blood.

Imagine a drain that becomes clogged with calcium deposits, soap and hair - it makes it much more difficult for water to pass through it and can even back up, flooding the sink!

The liver isn’t so different. When we eat the “right wrong” foods for our bodies, max out our toxic burdens with chemicals, heavy metals or mold, and reduce our own natural detoxification capability - we might feel our own internal sinks begin to overflow.

Eating foods rich in emulsifying acids, salts and healthy fats is an excellent way to help clear the liver of buildup - and this salad is full of them!

Why It’s Wild:

Mango is high in Vitamin A, a nutrient proven to help activate Phase 1 liver detox. Cilantro is an excellent detoxifier of heavy metals while sea salt is emulsifying, and helps the body break down fats (a vital function of the liver). Lime is an emulsifier as well!

The avocado, mangos, and cilantro in this salad also combine to make a potassium powerhouse. Potassium is important in regulating heart function, reducing blood pressure, converting glucose into glycogen for use by our muscles, and is a pH balancer. Since blood filtration is a key role of our liver function, optimizing the pH and nutrient value of the blood is an excellent way to reduce the liver’s burden.

Ingredients:

  • 2 avocados, peeled, pitted and cut into cubes
  • 1 mango, peeled, pitted, and cut into cubes
  • 1 cup coarsely chopped fresh cilantro
  • 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
  • (Optional) Freshly squeezed juice from ½ lime

To Make:

Combine all ingredients in a serving bowl.
Toss together and chill for 5 to 10 minutes.

Serves 4!

Idea: serve this salad as an appetizer or as a side dish with pinto beans, which contain liver-supportive fiber. Or...lean white fish rich in selenium, a potent liver detoxifier and antioxidant.

Enjoy!
