The Last Wave Of Summer

This week we celebrated National Beach Day, and with the Labor Day holiday just around the corner, I want to take a moment to reflect on the coming seasonal transition.

Summer is a time of spiritual production and abundance. Flowers bloom. Fruits and vegetables reach their peak. A blush falls on the world. Mornings are filled with breezes, birdsong and ease. Our bones grow strong in the sun while our skin soaks up the light, boosting dopamine and serotonin.

But summer is also a season of detoxification and cleansing, of letting go. Our bodies sweat, purging toxins. Heat can overwhelm us, requiring that we take hydration and proper nutrition into consideration. The abundance of Vitamin D and sunshine lowers the guard of our immune system.

As with any transition, preparation is key. As we look towards fall, I like to let my body know what’s coming.

1.)

I try to introduce more autumnal foods like root vegetables and nightshades at the end of summer. These mineral and antioxidant rich foods can help give the immune system a boost before the first chill hits the air, letting your internal clock know: change is coming.

2.)

Seek out the sea. Ocean water is medicinal and cleansing. The salt can help clear up skin conditions and the bracing water can help clear your headspace. Humans are ritualistic by nature - seek out whatever end of season practices feel right to you.

3.)

Switch up your routine. If you’ve been drinking coffee all summer, try switching to a morning cup of yerba mate or diluted lemon water. If you run in the mornings, try jogging in the evening instead. Energize your system by introducing something new.

How do you prepare for fall? Everyone has their own, unique ritual.

To The Tru Of You,
Teri Cochrane
