How To Stay Balanced When You're On The Go
I have spent the last 4 days proving that you can eat healthfully (following my 80/20 rule - 80% good, 20% "cheat") in even the most decadent of foodie cities in this country…. New Orleans.
My goal was to match healthy with authentic. My family and I literally ate our way through the French Quarter, but the scale did not reflect it in the end. We accomplished this by starting our morning - every morning - with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in water. (Yes, I travel with it.) ACV helps to alkalize the body, acts as a fat burner and an immune builder, and works as a liver cleanser to help balance out those dark and stormy drinks...
Now On To The Food...
We kicked off our eating extravaganza with a cauliflower steak paired with whipped feta! Then we moved on to a health-conscious spot, Surry’s Cafe and Juice Bar, where we had a carrot, celery, and cucumber juice. I followed this snack with black beans, brown rice and melted cheddar, while my kids enjoyed French toast. A happy morning filled with nutrition and treats - but still following our 80/20 rule.
We were lucky enough to get into Brennans that evening which proved to be the best dinner of the trip - lean protein mains and vegetables with decadent, heavier sides.
Another way we were able to keep fit was by rocking the French Quarter walking tour - meaning that we jogged to each of the historic sites then stopped and read about the historical significance. It was a blast!
Yes there were beignets from Cafe du Monde (bien sur!) and crepes, but we balanced these with healthful helpings of salad and plenty of water throughout the day to help our bodies metabolize and digest.
The key here? Equilibrium. Balance. If you spend a week binging - or restricting - you'll find yourself up a creek without a paddle. Life and food are to be enjoyed, but we have to marry that enjoyment with our very real need to feed our bodies the fuel they deserve.
Miss you already, New Orleans – Je reviens~
To The Tru Of You,
Teri Cochrane
