Fermentation: Is It Right For You?

Fermentation: Is It Right For You?

Can you ferment your way to a happy gut?

Over 70% of our immune system lives in our gut. That’s why I believe a happy, healthy microbiome is your first step towards better immune function.

However, fermentation may not be the best way to achieve a balanced biome…Today’s market is flooded with advice boasting the benefits of prebiotic and probiotic fermented foods & all of the wonders they can do for our microbiomes. These “wonder foods” include:

  • Kefir
  • Sauerkraut
  • Kimchi
  • Anything pickled
  • Kombucha
  • “Prebiotic” Teas

While these foods may help with gut balance for some, they can be extremely detrimental for others. If you suffer from gut dysbiosis, candida, hyperacidity, acne, hormonal imbalances, or an underlying fungal issue, these fermented goods may exacerbate your symptoms by providing a potent source of food for bad bacteria...

For instance, this Pub Med article exploring the impacts of fermentation on the gut microbiome remarks that "Probiotics should not be universally given as a ‘one-size-fits-all’... taking probiotics after treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics may actually delay the return of normal gut microbiome, a new potential adverse side effect."

The researchers further note that:

"Gut microbiota modulates the expression of many genes in the human intestinal tract, including genes involved in immunity, nutrient absorption, energy metabolism, and intestinal barrier function."

As always, I would argue that determining whether a fermented food or probiotic is "right for your body" depends on how you are and who you are. No one diet is right for everyone, and the influence of foods & supplements on gene expression is unique to a given individual. So that 'probiotic' shot your friend loves that boosts her mood and makes her skin glow? If it gives you acne, mood swings and indigestion - avoid it!

In any case, the gut microbiome can play a powerful role in our wellbeing. For those of you struggling with your gut health, my personally formulated Immune Mover may help you turn the ship around.
